Box spring beds are now available in abundance. From classic box spring beds to beds with a bed box and box spring beds with an engine, customers can choose from a wide range of products.
The popular beds promise more comfort. But not every box spring bed is also a good box spring bed. We will show you how to recognize really good box spring beds.
Distinguishing real from fake box spring beds
When buying a box spring bed, first of all make sure do your own online research and also read this post from laweekly.com as it cover the depth of a good mattress.
Some providers advertise their box spring beds with ridiculous prices. These products often only have a box spring look, but not a real box spring bed.
In concrete terms this means that many inexpensive box spring beds lack a spring core in the box, although it is precisely this spring core that is characteristic of a box spring bed.
Therefore, the term “box spring bed” is more appropriate for beds in box spring design.
So the first thing you should do is take a look at the lower box – even if the bed is advertised as a box spring bed.
Once you have found a box spring bed that you like, you can use the following quality features to check whether it is a high-quality box spring bed.
Recognize good box spring beds: Solid wood underbox
The spring core of a box spring bed is located in the so-called lower box. This underbox should ideally consist of solid wood. Solid wood can also withstand greater loads.
This is especially important for load-bearing elements. Only the floor covering of the lower box can also be made of substitute materials such as medium density fibreboard (MDF). This makes the bed much lighter.
Recognize good box spring beds: Pocket spring core
An essential component of a box spring bed is the spring core in the lower box.
Only it makes a box spring bed into a box spring bed. But just because a box spring bed has a spring core does not mean that it is good.
There are also differences in the quality of the spring core that distinguish a good box spring bed from other beds.
Box spring beds are usually available with a bonell spring core or pocket spring core. Bonell springs are somewhat softer and give way to surface elasticity.
This means that those parts of the body that are supposed to sink in do sink in. However, in return, the remaining parts of the body are not sufficiently supported.
In this case, a person with a high body weight would sink in too far overall. A Bonell spring core is therefore particularly suitable for people under 100 kg, as less weight is generally needed in the box.
With a pocket spring core, the individual springs are sewn together in connected pockets. Thus a pocket spring core supports the body point-elastically.
This means that it ensures that heavier parts of the body can sink in and lighter areas are supported. Pocket spring cores are therefore also suitable for persons with a higher body weight (over 100 kg) and are the more valuable spring cores overall.
So if you want a really good box spring bed, you should go for a box spring bed with pocket spring cores. But under 100 kg body weight a box spring bed with bonell springs is also suitable.
Recognize good box spring beds: Spring mattress with foam cover and zone division
A good spring core is one thing, a good mattress is another. For example, a good box spring bed should also have a spring core and be equipped with a foam cover.
With the foam cover it is important to pay attention to the type of foam. Only choose mattresses whose cover consists of foams with a high restoring force.
These include cold foam and Klimalatex, for example. Do not use polyether foam covers – although they are inexpensive, their very low restoring force promotes the formation of coolness.
In principle, the higher the restoring force, the higher quality and more dimensionally stable the foam.
In addition, a good innerspring mattress should yield differently depending on the body zone. In this case we also speak of a zone mattress. A zone mattress can have five, seven or nine zones. Seven zones are usually sufficient for good body support.
Recognize good box spring beds: Toppers made of cold foam, visco or Klimalatex
A box spring bed usually includes the so-called topper – a flat mattress that lies on top of the actual mattress.
A good box spring bed should of course also have a choice of high-quality toppers, i.e. toppers made of cold foam, visco, Klimalatex or soft foam and NOT of PUR foam.
By the way: a topper made of cold foam, visco or Klimalatex allows a box spring bed to be adapted to the different types of foam.
